Modified big piston can be said to be one of the most popular refitting supplements in recent years. Of course, the purpose of many car owners'refitting is not only to improve braking performance, but also for visual effects. For example, the big four pistons of Brembo, AP Racing, Alcon, Ferodo and other brands, even the small six piston brake pliers are deeply loved by the refitted car owners. But the question is, is it absolutely good to refit such multi-piston brake calipers?
First let Nivo Motion (Shanghai) Automotive Parts Co., Ltd. explain why multi-piston brake calipers are needed. The brake calipers used in ordinary models are set by a single piston. When the brake pedal is pressed, the pressure is applied to the brake oil in the brake master pump, and the liquid transfers the pressure through the brake tube to the piston of the brake calipers, which causes the piston to drive the brake calipers to clamp the brake disc, thus creating friction force to stop the brake.
This kind of design is enough for ordinary driving, but if your car's horsepower is improved or you drive more intensely (like on a mountain road or off a track), then the brake system must be upgraded to apply more pressure to make the brake calipers clamp the brake disc in time, which contributes to the birth of multi-piston calipers.
However, more is not necessarily good. Why does Xiaobian say so? Because besides the number of pistons, it also depends on the total force area of the piston. The more pistons do not mean the larger the contact area of the piston. For example, under the same size of brake pad and brake disc, the greater the total force area of the four pistons, the better the braking force of the four pistons.
Therefore, blindly pursuing more pistons has no practical significance. The more pistons, the larger the volume of the brake calipers, which means that the weight will rise, but not necessarily benefit the performance of the car.
Moreover, more total piston area requires more brake oil to propel the piston. At this time, it is necessary to consider whether the brake master pump can cope with it. In case the master pump does not supply enough oil, the piston will not be propelled enough, but it will be more dangerous. Compared with upgrading multi-piston calipers, in fact, it would be more practical to change into a set of tires with better grip. Without good grip, no matter how good the brake performance is, because even if your brake calipers are dead and grabbing the brake disc, the tire is useless!
The main reason why a car can stop is the friction between tire and ground, which determines the braking effect of the braking system. With beautiful multi-piston brake calipers, but not enough tyre pattern and grip, minute will bring more danger!
